National Protected Area Expansion Strategy for South Africa

The strategy sets the priorities for expanding the protected area network for ecological sustainability and climate change adaptation, and conservation of South Africa’s biodiversity. Over five years, it intends to add more than 2 million hectares to the land-based protected area network, and more than 80 km to the inshore marine protected area network, in order to achieve the country’s protected area targets. The expansion strategy is expected to be carried out in a cost-effective fashion. Maps of
the most important areas for the protected area expansion are set out, and recommendations are made.

National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act: Regulations for the Management of the Agulhas Front Marine Protected Area
