The livestock industry is one of the crucial components of this agriculture system, contributing 40% of agriculture’s GDP and 15% of national GDP. The livestock industry is however plagued by low productivity, as production levels are well below regional and continental average. Efforts have been made to combat the challenges through improving livestocks genetically; these efforts have proved not quite useful, the cause of which is attributed to lack of a coordinating policy on animal breeding. This policy and strategy seeks to fill this void.
