Rural Electrification Strategy

The role played by electricity on the accelerated development of the country is recognised and appreciated by the Rwandan government. The rural electrification strategy is geared towards ensuring Rwanda’s rural households have unhindered access to electricity, at effective cost. It aims to leverage on four basic programmes; provision of basic solar systems as basic necessities, support of the private sector through risk based mitigating system, development of mini grids in suitable locations, and the roll out of Electricity Access Rollout Programme (EARP). It broadly has an objective of attaining 70% access to electricity by 2017/2018, and 100% by 2020.
